Being listed on ITC can have serious implications on your ability to access credit, rent a property or even secure employment. Fortunately, there are clear steps you can take to clear your name and restore your credit profile
What does it mean to be "Blacklisted" by ITC?
Many South Africans refer to having a poor credit record as being "blacklisted." This typically means that one or more credit bureaus, have negative information about you, such as having:
Defaulted accounts, Judgments against your name, being under Administration or being Sequestrated and when making late payments or missing a payment.
Step-by-Step guide to removing your name from ITC:
1. Obtain Your Credit Report
Start by checking your credit status. You are entitled to one free credit report per year from each credit bureau. Review the report for outstanding debts, Judgments and incorrect listings. The undermentioned bureaus, just to mention a few are usually of great help when obtaining a report:
2. Settle Outstanding Debts
If you have unpaid debts that you are aware of, contact your creditors to negotiate repayment or a settlement. Thereafter once the account is fully settled, request a paid-up letter. A paid-up letter is a crucial document confirming that you no longer owe money on that account and can you use this as proof when applying for ITC.
3. Apply for Clearance
Once you have settled your debts:
If a judgment was issued, you can appoint a Private Attorney to assist you with a Rescission of Judgment application. Once an order has been granted by the Court, the Order must be submitted to the credit bureau with your ID and the paid-up letter. If the listing was due to default (but not a judgment), send the paid-up letter directly to the Credit bureau.
4. Dispute Incorrect Listings
If you notice information on your credit report that is incorrect, fraudulent and outdated, you can file a dispute with the credit bureau. They are legally required to investigate and respond within 20 business days.
5. Wait for Automatic Removal (if applicable)
Some listings automatically fall off after a certain time:
Type of Listing | Removal Timeframe |
Paid-up accounts | 1 year after settlement |
Defaults | 1–2 years (if paid) |
Judgments | 5 years (unless rescinded) |
Sequestration | 10 years (or Court Order) |
Administration orders | 10 years or by Court |
Tips to Improve Your Credit Record After Removal
Always make sure to pay bills on time, avoid taking on too much debt at a time, use credit responsibly and regularly monitor your credit report.
Removing your name from ITC is a process, but it’s one that can be completed with the right documentation, patience and persistence. Clearing your credit profile not only improves your financial health, but also opens doors for future opportunities.
