What is the effect of the compulsory school attendance age of fifteen years? In terms
of Section 3 (1) of the... South African School’s Act 84 of 1996, every parent has
an obligation to compel their child / children to attend school from the first
day of school when the child reaches the age of seven, until the last day of
school when the child reaches the age of 15 years or the ninth grade, whichever
occurs first, on condition that the learner is not a child with special needs. Basically this duty to attend school is placed
only on the parent (which is the legal guardian) of the child and does not have
any effect on the child concerned.
