In my case, this decision was purely for financial reasons. I’m joking.
I chose to become an attorney because I love helping people. However, I’m not going to focus on that in this blog because I bet that’s what all the boys say and not all of them believe it.
I’m going to start with a statement that is honest, “I don’t always enjoy being an attorney” and not because the job sucks but because there are many moments where I am just anxious and stressed. Please don’t get me wrong, admitting to this doesn’t mean that I am an incompetent attorney, but this line of work means people’s lives, their freedom and their well being rest in my hands.
Accepting an instruction from a client means that “YOU”, the attorney, have made a conscious decision to protect your clients’ constitutional rights. It means that your client has entrusted you to protect them. That you agree to stay up at night so that they can sleep.
I haven’t worked on a hundred files yet, but some files have been opened and given to me to work on and I love being able to mediate those matters for clients and drafting arguments to protect their constitutional rights. I think it connects me to life, its truth and the devastations.
Being an attorney is changing my perspective on life and that is what I wouldn’t change for anything.
Side note: This is based on my personal experience; some attorneys might beg to differ.
