The purpose behind the path of law

I have recently placed a blog in which I gave a historic view of some of the symbols used in our law and discussed the meaning behind some of the symbols used in the statue of Lady justice, which consist mainly about the impartiality of the law.

I will now turn and focus on the purpose behind my path in the law. My partner in a recent staff meeting made a statement in terms of which it was required from you to re-evaluate your purpose. The reason why you come to work every day and whether you have a purpose when coming to work.

Now for most attorneys, I believe and this belief can be misconstrued, that the purpose is simple - to make money. If you look at law shows on TV, such as Suits or Boston Legal, lawyers are depicted as these immoral, money hungry wolves that will do almost everything to win a case, with questionable ethics with the main goal to bill their clients to enable them to drive the nice cars and have the tailor made suits.

I must say that although to make money is essential in every business, including a law firm, this should not be the purpose of the lawyer or firm.

In a recent video of Simon Sinek, he explained that as in any business money is essential to ensure that the business continues, but money is a mere by-product of purpose of the company. The "WHY" is important. Why does the company do business that way. "Money is only the fuel that makes the car go, the why is the destination where the car is going".

During self-evaluation, I need to answer this question, why am I an attorney, and why do I practice law.  Keeping in mind what I have blogged about in my previous blog, I believe my purpose is to further the law.

This can, in my view, only be done by ensuring that:

1) The next generation lawyers are trained to further the law and not only to make money;
2) That you as an attorney have a duty towards your client, to resolve the dispute, not only to fee the most from- and release the client;
3) That you as attorney, as an officer of court, must ensure that the law is protected and not just to bend the law to obtain success.

Although this is a very bold or unrealistic purpose I believe that you must have a higher purpose than money.
