Music for the soul and a will for the rest
16 September 2021,

As most of you know the month of September is Will's month and what that entails, is that a promotion is held by LEAD SA where it is actively marketed that people must get a will, which for the month of September will be free of charge. This is to ensure that all the members of the public at least have a written will somewhere to assist the people left behind after their passing.
I find it extremely difficult to "blog" and prefer to rather write a legal article as the contents falls within my knowledge and is easily accessible.
But when it comes to a "blog" I tend to struggle.
While thinking of a topic to blog about and this being Will's week, I found my mind drifting away to one of my favourite songs, being Chris de Burgh's Spanish Train, which is about a Railway man at the end of his life having his family by his side.
I thought to myself that I did my will after the birth of my son, which is 5 years ago, and my will is due for an upgrade - how many attorneys have a will or at the very least have updated their wills recently?
I surely hope it is not the case as one of the old clichés that the mechanic's car is always broken, when it gets to the will of an attorney.
Being in practice for almost 10 years now, I have realized the importance of a will not just to ensure that your last wishes are complied with but to prevent any unnecessary disputes between the persons left behind. I have dealt with terrible cases were the heirs in the estate cannot see eye to eye and end up not only breaking down any relationship still left but litigating the estate close to insolvency.
I have realized that the greatest gift to leave behind to the ones you love is not assets, although it helps, but peace of mind in the form of a will and a capable executor, who is known by the heirs, to administer your estate.
You will find that every Tom, Dick and Harry can assist you with your will including most of the Banks and Auditors but my view is that you should have your estate administered by a trusted attorney, who knows your family and business to ensure that your last wishes are contained in your will and your estate properly administered.
I hope this blog will inspire you all to re-evaluate your will or get one for free during September.
