Your expired license and Covid-19

30 June 2020 632

An expired license disc under normal circumstances can be a mammoth task. Even more so now that the nation-wide lockdown has been lifted and all the backlog of traffic related matters need to be handled.

You might be wondering what happens if your license disk, driver’s license or learner’s license expired during the lockdown. This blog will address those concerns.

If your license disk, driver’s license or learner’s license expired anywhere between 29 March and 1 June, you will automatically be granted a 90 day grace period in which to renew your license – this grace period is without a fine.

However, if your license expired before 29 March, and you failed to renew it, you will not qualify for this 90 day grace period.

If you had in fact renewed your license, but were unable to collect it before lockdown; ensure that you have the proof of payment and any other documentation with you, so that if you get pulled over – you can show that you have paid.

Most traffic departments across the country are dealing with the backlog of work; and therefore getting your license renewed may take longer than expected. Some patience and a flask of coffee might be your best friends in the process.
